Audience: 6-12 years old.
Pre-requisite research, imagination and gathering required. It’s always a great idea for engineers to research ideas on how to build what they want. So for this project, we encourage you to go online and find out how other kids around the world have made cars, wheels and axles with readily available materials. Youtube is excellent for this type of research.
-Think recyclables, scraps, arts/crafts, odds and ends, unused toys
-Hot glue gun, tape, scissors, protractor, colored markers/pencils/construction paper
-Supplies to make your own:
1) Car body. Suggestions: cardboard, card-stock, foam, folders, index cards, and/or paper, empty plastic bottles, rigid panels, planes, or platforms.
2) Wheels. Suggestions: anything found round, or material that can be cut circular, round caps or lids, disks, toys, cups, tubes.
3) Axles. Suggestions: straws, coffee stirrers, tubes, rods, dowels, toothpicks, cue-tips, eye hooks, paperclips, round pens/pencils, push pins, nails
4) Car top Design. Suggestions: What type of look, amenities, passengers do you want on your vehicle. Will you make your own or gather old toys and other objects to adorn your ride? Will LEGO Darth Vader or Sponge Bob drive your car? Maybe it's driver-less!! Does it even have a steering wheel, or is it a rolling playground? It's ALL up to YOU!!!
